Most advertisers live with an unspoken rule: if you want more conversions, you have to accept a higher cost per conversion. Scale up spend, and efficiency usually slips. It is the tradeoff everyone braces for.
In July 2026, one of our clients broke that rule.
Over a single month, we grew their Google Ads account from a modest baseline to over 53,000 clicks and nearly 1,900 conversions, more than doubling almost every core metric. And instead of paying more per lead as we scaled, cost per conversion actually dropped.
Here is how we did it, and what any advertiser can learn from the approach.
The Starting Point vs. The Results
Before diving into strategy, here is the full picture from the July 1 to July 31, 2026 reporting period.
| Metric | Result | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks | 53,201 | +35,485 |
| Conversions | 1,891.12 | +1,142.39 |
| Cost per Conversion | $75.65 | -$3.32 |
| Total Spend | $143,060.04 | +$83,937.14 |
| CTR | 5.04% | |
| Conversion Rate | 3.10% |
The headline number is simple: conversions grew by roughly 153 percent while cost per conversion actually improved. That is not the pattern you see when an account is just spending its way to more volume. It is the pattern you see when the right campaigns are identified and scaled deliberately.
Spend did increase significantly, up nearly $84,000 for the month. But that increase was not spread evenly across the account. It was concentrated in a small number of proven winners, which is exactly why efficiency held steady instead of eroding.
Strategy Pillar One: Let Brand Strength Do the Heavy Lifting
Every strong account needs an anchor, and for this client, that anchor was branded search.
The National Branded Campaign delivered 612 conversions, the highest of any single campaign, at a cost per conversion of just $74.53. Its click-through rate hit an impressive 8.95 percent, a clear signal of strong relevance and high intent from people already searching for the brand by name.
When you combine National Branded with USA General Search, these two campaigns alone accounted for approximately 1,107 conversions, roughly 58 percent of everything the account produced, at a consistent cost per conversion near $74.
The lesson here is not flashy, but it is important: before chasing new channels or aggressive expansion, make sure your branded and generic core search campaigns are fully optimized. They tend to be the most reliable, most efficient part of any account, and they set the baseline that everything else gets measured against.
Strategy Pillar Two: Scale Performance Max Where It Is Proven
The single biggest driver of new volume this month was Performance Max, but not blindly. We scaled it specifically where the data already showed it worked.
USA_WEST_PMAX_01 was the standout. It generated 404 conversions at just $39.02 per conversion, the best efficiency of any major campaign in the account, while pulling in over 28,000 clicks and 3,160 TrueView video views. That is the highest volume Performance Max campaign in the portfolio, and it proved that video integration within PMax can meaningfully contribute to conversions rather than just padding impressions.
Once that regional model was validated, we replicated it in other markets. USA_SOUTHWEST_PMAX_01 came in at $42.29 per conversion, and USA_MIDWEST_PMAX_01 hit an even lower $48.17 per conversion. Smaller in raw volume, but proof that the underlying strategy travels well across regions.
The takeaway: do not scale Performance Max everywhere at once. Find the regional or audience segment where it is already converting efficiently, understand why, and then expand that specific formula rather than throwing budget at PMax as a whole.
Strategy Pillar Three: Reliable Core Search as the Volume Engine
While branded search and Performance Max got the biggest headlines, general search campaigns kept the engine running underneath.
USA General Search delivered 495.38 conversions at $73.73 per conversion with a 7.05 percent click-through rate, consistently the second-highest conversion volume in the account. Seasonal variants performed even better on engagement, with the Christmas and Holiday search campaign posting an 8.15 percent CTR.
This is the unglamorous middle of the account: not the newest test, not the biggest scale-up, just steady and dependable. But it matters. Core search is what keeps performance stable while the team tests and scales elsewhere. Without it, the flashier wins in branded and PMax would not have as solid a floor to stand on.
The Honest Part: Where It Did Not Work Yet
No account review is complete without acknowledging what is not working, and this one is no exception.
Several local and search test campaigns showed high cost per conversion this period. These are exactly the kind of experiments that are supposed to carry more risk. Not every test succeeds, and that is the point of testing in the first place.
Rather than treating this as a shortfall, we are treating it as the next phase of optimization. The plan is to either refine targeting and creative on these underperforming tests, or reallocate that budget toward the proven regional PMax formula that is already working elsewhere in the account.
Transparency about what is not working yet is part of how real, sustainable scaling happens. Accounts that hide their weak spots tend to repeat the same mistakes.
What This Means for Your Account
The biggest misconception in paid search is that growth and efficiency are opposites. This account proves otherwise, at least when scaling is done with intention.
The formula that worked here was straightforward:
- Protect and fully optimize your branded and core search campaigns first, since they are your most efficient conversion source.
- Identify where Performance Max is already converting well, then scale that specific model into new regions rather than expanding blindly.
- Keep general search steady as your dependable volume engine.
- Watch your tests closely, and be willing to cut or reallocate budget from anything that is not earning its keep.
Scaling does not have to mean rising costs. It means finding out what is already working, understanding why, and doing more of exactly that.
